Milwaukee Area Resources for Conscious Movement

Conscious Movement refers to mindful movement practices that encourage listening to and moving from the body's wisdom. These practices are not meant to be approached as "exercise," although they may indeed be of great benefit to once's physical fitness. The real purpose of Conscious Movement is to reconnect with the ease and expressiveness of movement that our souls crave, that we enjoyed as children, and that are our birthright as human animals.

As such, Conscious Movement is more of an attitude that can be brought to any physical activity, rather than any specific type of movement. Below is a list I prepared for workshop participants to help them identify Consicous Movement opportunities in the Greater Milwaukee area.

Please note, this list is not meant to be exhaustive, though I will try to keep the links updated as the information changes. Keep in mind that some of the websites linked below are not updated often, even if the group meets actively. It is best to call for more information. If you are aware of additional resources not listed here, please contact me, as I'd love to add them to the list.

Yoga: There are far too many studios, not to mention forms of yoga, to link to just one website. I encourage you to try out different forms and different instructors until you find something that resonates for you. Some options that may particularly support emotional exploration include Yoga Nidra, Restorative Yoga, and Yin Yoga. Options that may support healing from trauma include Trauma-Sensitive Yoga and Forrest Yoga. LifeForce Yoga has also been developed to address depression.

“There is a way of being

which is lighter,

which is freer.

A way in which

work as well as play

becomes a dance

and living, a song.

We can learn this way.”
